Math Instruction
Curriculum 2.0 is now in all grade levels K-5. The math curriculum upgrades are derived from internationally benchmarked standards which make up the National Common Core Standards. Starting with the primary grades students will be digging deeper into specific concepts and building stronger foundations for number concepts, thinking skills and their application to problem solving. Since the new standards are more rigorous, pulling down content from upper grades and expecting students to reach a deep level of mastery, their will no longer be a great need for students to skip a grade ahead for challenging math instruction. MCPS is adding enriched and accelerated instruction to the new standards to ensure that all students are challenged in their grade level math instruction. Curriculum resources and materials are designed using the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to support all types of learners including special education, English Language Learners and gifted and talented students.
